About CMRB

The California Melon Research Board came into being on June 26, 1972 and was established to provide for "General Research" as outlined in the Marketing Order, Article III, Section A as follows:
Research and Development and Survey Studies: The Board is authorized to undertake, or cause to be conducted and to administer, research development and survey programs with respect to varietal development, production, harvesting and transportation from field to processing points on any or all varieties of melons; provided, that such research may include research to determine the carrying quality of new varieties of melons and improved strains of existing varieties of melons. With the approval of the Department, the Board may expend money, enter into contracts with qualified research agencies and do all things necessary and proper in the conduct of a melon research and development and survey program limited by the provisions of Section 58892 of the Act.
The Board is made up of five producer members and their alternates representing four districts in California and five "at-large" handlers and their alternates. Over the years the Board has funded over seventy projects ranging from "Africanized Honey Bee Management", to "Zucchini Yellows Mosaic Virus" work, utilizing scientists not only from the University of California, but from such places as Cornell University, Texas A&M, University of Arizon, as well as private research companies. Each year in January, these researchers give their annual reports at the Melon Symposium in San Diego. This gives industry members a chance to hear firsthand about the work done each year and also gives them the chance to ask questions of the researchers.
